New Year Resolutions - Schmesolutions?

Do you take stock of your past year and resolve to do things differently when the new year starts? I'll admit, I do. In fact, as I'm sitting here contemplating drinking one of my favorite guilty pleasures: Rockstar, I'm simultaneously thinking--I HAVE to stop drinking these.

Why? Well, a friend just told me a sick story about how a case of busted RSs ( as we call them in my house ) ate through an entire pallet at a grocery store in 15 minutes! Yikes! That makes me wonder if I'm going to have an Alienesque experience here any second with Rockstar gushing from my gut.

I have lots of things I'd like to see happen this year. Here are a few:

The proverbial last 20 lbs. Used to be 10, but writing has added another thick layer to my thighs and butt. Yeah, I'd like to blast off the fat once and for all this next year.

I'd like to find a fabu agent for my next YA novel. I've had two fabu agents ( years back ) before I went indie, it's time to try this again.

Those are the two you can hold me to this year. I want to hear yours. Come on, you're amongst friends here, fess up and tell me.

Title Love

Ever hear a book title and swoon? BEFORE even reading the book? Some titles are magic. I admit, I'm intrigued first by a title, then a cover, THEN the blurb. Nothing's worse than a great title or cover only to find out the book disappoints you. ( Let's remember that the book might be somebody's favorite - and that's OK! )

Some titles that delivered for me:

DAMAGE by Josephine Hart

This title says it all. Relationships that destroy and the ramifications thereof. LOVED this book.

TWILIGHT by Stephenie Meyer

Ambiguous. Curious. Why did you pick up this book?

INEXCUSABLE by Mark Lynch

I love any book that says it like it is, i.e. DAMAGE listed above, making promises the author keeps.

SEXY by Joyce Carol Oates.

The story of a high school boy who doesn't understand the sexual power he exudes over others, including unlikely adults in his life.

These are just a sampling of my favorites----a few that caught my eye and WHY they caught my eye.

A Special Treat to Share

Many of you know that HEAVENLY is based on my family and our challenges dealing with our daughter who has autism.

Along our journey with autism and learning to cope, we've met some real guardian angels, fantastic helpers who've come to our rescue and provided much needed help and relief from from the draining effects of living with a handicapped child.

One of them is "Abria's" current teacher at school. Her name is Tricia Lund and she's doing miraculous things for the children in our daughter's class. A local college made this short video about what's happening, how the children are growing and changing and I wanted to share it with you.

See if you can pick out "Abria" - she's in there! But she's kind of camera shy.

This time of year I am reminded of what I have to be grateful for. We're so blessed to have this wonderful teacher working with our angel daughter.

~Barnes & Noble Authorpalooza~

My son and his wife and my grandbabies stopped by to say hello.

So today was my first ever author event. I've spoken at various functions, but this was my first signing experience. It was pretty darned fun!

The highlight was meeting readers who'd come to the event just to meet me. THAT. WAS. FABULOUS.

It was fun interacting with other authors, too, and just being in a bookstore is always a good thing.

Some of the authors were seasoned at this routine, including my tablemate, YA author Joy Spraycar.

What I learned: that these events are nothing to fear. I was pretty hesitant to do something like this, but I wouldn't hesitate again. The crowd was warm and it was very upbeat.

What I'd do differently: I wish the event hadn't been on a day when so many other big events were going on in the community, but I didn't have any control over that.

The Heavenly hardcovers were the hot sale item! Everybody LOVED the artwork. That was cool.

Overall, the Authorpalooza was a positive experience. There's nothing like meeting people you've chatted with and "met" through your books! That was really outstanding.

Special Sundays

What makes Sunday special to you? Do you have family traditions you save for Sunday that you look forward to all week?

Growing up in Palos Verdes, California, Sundays for me meant my parents having friends over for big dinners and football parties ( or basketball ). Sundays also meant big family gatherings ( because our house was large and centrally located )

These days, Sundays for my family start out at church and end at home with a huge family dinner with ( usually ) one to three guests. Which means I make a giant meal every week. I love this -- it's fun to plan and wonderful to execute and enjoy. My children and their children look forward to an array of baked goods - their requests always considered for the day!

We take a walk after dinner and enjoy the changing colors, the view of the lake, saying hello to neighbors.

The evening is spent visiting and watching a film appropriate for the day: something the whole family can enjoy like The Parent Trap, or The Other Side of Heaven - two of our family favorites.

As most of you know I give away copies of Heavenly to all of my Facebook friends for their birthday. I sign the books, and now and then I spell a name wrong! I can't send those to readers, and I refuse to waste a book and throw it away so I'm offering some of those books here this week.

3 copies of HEAVENLY are up for grabs.

I'll cross off the inscription in black ink before mailing. The books are not for resale ( or I'd have done that myself )

I also have a box of EDEN books that came back from the printer with the ink slightly off color. YOU might not notice the difference, but I did. So I can't sell them. Like I said, I HATE wasting. If you want a copy of EDEN ( Again, NOT TO RESELL ) chime in for that.

Pain, Sweat and Blood ; My next book.

That's what it feels like I'm giving to this project. The hardest book to write to date. ABSOLUTION had that honor until I started this thing. I've asked myself WHY it's A) so difficult B) taking so long to write. Usually, I'm the three month kid. I'll be lucky to have this wrapped by the end of this year for publication next year at this rate.

Stories are always personal for me - that's probably why this one has been difficult. It's not that the subject is difficult, it's that I tend to write the tone of my life into my work and right now my life is dark.

Used to be writing was a lovely respite for me. But the muse suffers when I suffer. I'm stretching myself by fighting to keep the muse alive so I can keep going. I hope this will make me a tougher mother, wife, friend and author. Who knows.

I'm dying to be done with this project, though. There's a point in every creative process where you're JUST DONE WITH IT. I've written this particular story twice already: years ago as a women's romance and before that as a screenplay.

Writing it now for my YA readers is a fascinating and wonderful trip. I'm loving the changes and the genre fits the story so well the old versions are fading from my thoughts. ( A fight! The characters, stubborn as they were, refused to change! )

Time for me to be disciplined and get back to work.The weekend is almost here and the fam and I are going to the Utah State Fair - our yearly tradition. Wish you could come along - it's an amazing day of sights, scents and fantastic eats!

What Do You Do?

Whatever your passion is, sometimes daily life presents obstacles that makes fulfilling your love or passion difficult. One of my passions is writing. ( if you didn't know that already ) I've been working on my WIP for months and should be finished by now. But I'm not. Myriads of issues have come up in my family that have kept me from being able to keep my usual pace. It's so hard to not feel like I'm letting myself ( as well as readers ) down.

Those of you who've read HEAVENLY know that the story is my family story dealing with autism, substance abuse and other family issues. It was painful to write because we ( as a family ) were at the peak of my son's drug abuse during the writing. At least I could control the outcome of "Luke's" issues in Heavenly. I haven't had that luxury in real life. His choices have taken our family on a roller coaster ride that won't stop and seems to be headed toward a major crash.

Unfortunately, "Luke's" relapsed again. This time he's older and has a wife and two babies. The stakes are so much higher and I feel even more helpless. Our whole family is rallying around them to try and help but he's quite far down the path again.

I always enlist God's help in my life and I pray for him daily. At this point, I feel like that's ALL I can do because he's an adult and has to live with the results of his choices. But it's still so difficult.

If you've been through this ( or something similar ) share your thoughts and ideas and what you've found that works. Your ideas and suggestions might help me and others out there who are dealing with similar challenges.

So, I'm going to my hometown of SoCal ( Southern California ) for a much-needed getaway. I've written about my hometown of Palos Verdes in three of my books: A Season of Eden takes place there, Colin and Ashlyn are from there in Overprotected and John and Kane began their fated friendship in Palos Verdes. It's safe to say I miss it and am in love with the area.

Crazieness!

Is it crazy at your house? Kids are out of school and for me that means my daughter with autism who wanders around the house in endless chatter, trying to kiss me or poke me or tease me. She also sneaks food she's not supposed to eat ( up to her bedroom - you wouldn't believe the hairy strawberries and moldy cheese we've found in her room!) We love her, but living with her is like living with a flock of wild birds in the house.

My 14-year old boy is also off school now - plundering the fridge and pantry with his pack 'o pals in search of chips, soda and anything else to munch on. The cost to support him and his buddies around 150.00 a week I figure. HAHA.

I'm trying to finish my WIP that I hoped to have out by the end of this year, but it's not looking good at this point. In the mix, I'm posting giveaways here, on Facebook and on Twitter! Bear with me until I get this week's giveaway organized. I hope to have something summery and fun up tomorrow. But if I don't - you'll know I'm deflecting "kisses" from "Abria" and shopping the aisles at Walmart for my son and his friends.

Overprotected Release Day Party - SATURDAY

Celebrating the release of Overprotected! I'm soooo thrilled to share this story. It's the first book I wrote, when I started out 10 years ago. I wrote it as a women's romance, then as a screenplay, then I re-wrote it from Ashlyn's POV and VIOLA! It finally made it.

It amazes me how a story changes through various re-writes. With each version, there were multiple revisions, changes, etc. I bet I've written this story over 30 times when it's all said and done.

But the story felt wonderful from Ashlyn's POV, and I loved seeing her experiences wholly from her eyes. Her distortions of reality were fun to explore: feelings about Colin, her Dad and Mom - love leaving the reader to be a mediator of sorts, figuring out where her perspective is off and where it is on as the days and weeks of the events unfold.

On the sidebar I have an Overprotected link to a blog site where you can preview chapters and watch the trailer. I LOVE THE TRAILER. My daughter wrote the haunting song just for me, just for the trailer and that makes the trailer even more special for me.

I hope you'll stop by the FANPAGE for the release party festivities. You know me, there'll be oodles of swag from all the books. So if you have your heart set on something in particular, it'll probably be offered at some point.

10 Years and Counting.

I've been writing full time for ten years now. I wrote in my teens, raised 6 kids ( one of whom has autism - *read Heavenly* ) and then took to writing again.
It seems everyone has a book inside of them. Just the other day on Twitter somebody tweeted "Is anybody else feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of YA authors out there?"

It's easy to think you'll never find your place. You have to make your place. Always write because you love it first. Create the stories in your heart and there will always be an element of satisfaction to your work. Writing isn't easy, but the process smooths out the more you do it and settle into your groove.

The more I write, the more I create a place for myself in the world of books, the more it becomes clear to me that focusing on WHY I do this is the key to my daily joy. Yes, making a place for myself requires a certain amount of interacting with everything writerly that's out there. But I don't need to inhale it.

For me, writing comes first. Determination to share with others comes second and everything else I do to support those necessities (i.e. reading, blogging, marketing) has to be carefully weighed in because time is precious.

Where will I be 10 years from now? I've written 14 books in 10 years ( 3 are unpublished ) I have no plans to slow down my writing rate, so I hope that means I'll have another 14 or more books out there. It's not about numbers,I've written long enough to know my groove, know what works for me as far as production goes and so I can see down the road.

It's exciting to share stories with the world. If writing and sharing stories is your dream, keep at it. Create your path. There's no better time than now to make your place.
